About the Team

Jane Fisher

Jane is a Registered Mental Health Nurse (RMN). Since qualifying with a BSc (Hons) in mental health nursing she has worked predominantly in acute psychiatric inpatient services, both on an acute admissions ward and psychiatric intensive care unit. During this time she has worked with people with a wide range of psychiatric diagnoses and adopted a number of therapeutic approaches to treatment and care. Jane also has experience in working in low secure mental health rehabilitation, drug and alcohol services and medium secure forensic mental health services.

Jane has a specific interest in self-harm and the response from professionals and the public. She is passionate about raising awareness and removing some of the stigma attached to self-harm. Jane is currently developing a piece of work in association with the National Association of Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (NAPICU) on harm-minimisation for self-harm and its application to acute mental health services.

Jane's initial interest in self-harm and the need for training and development came from her own personal experiences of self-harm and depression. The feelings of isolation and lack of awareness from others that came with this motivated her to produce a website offering information and support for people who self-harm and their families and friends (www.freefromharm.co.uk). Through this site she has been able to support many individuals through their personal struggles with self-harm and related issues.
